Affinity Water welcomes Harrow College for World Water Day

On 22 March, Affinity Water’s Education Centre in Bushey Heath welcomed students from Harrow College to celebrate World Water Day, a day chosen by the United Nations and celebrated globally.

Affinity Water’s education team helped students from Harrow College understand the management of water on a local, national and global scale and explained why the Southeast of England is designated as a ‘water stressed’ area.

Science skills were enhanced and put to the test as the college students were taught how to sample freshwater invertebrates and learned how they can be used as key indicators of water quality in the environment.

The students also took part in a tour around a water treatment works where they saw first hand the rigorous processes that water taken from the environment goes through to ensure that it arrives at homes, schools and businesses as high quality, wholesome drinking water.

After the visit, students were able to use their learning experience for their college courses as well as learn more about their own water usage. Several students made pledges to change some of their own water related behaviours including having shorter showers and turning the tap off when they brush their teeth.

Sushmita Sen, a course leader from Harrow College said: “How fortunate we are to have such a wonderful resource on our doorstep. An outstanding day, as always! Thank you Affinity Water.”

Hannah Battram, Education Services Manager said: “Helping young people understand why we need to value and protect our water resources is so important. It was great opportunity to celebrate World Water Day with the students from Harrow College!”
