Free lagging kits

Prepare for the New Year Chill

Local water company Affinity Water is offering FREE lagging kits to customers to help prepare their homes as the cold weather hits, bringing a risk of frozen pipes and flooding.

In early 2018, much of the UK was in the grasp of the ‘Beast from the East’, which led to a massive increase in burst pipes inside and outside the home due to icy temperatures and sudden thaws. The FREE lagging kits will help protect pipes and outside taps to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.

An Affinity Water spokesperson said "Any sudden drop in temperature could cause damage to pipes and property if people aren't prepared. If pipes freeze during the night, the first you may be aware of a problem is when they thaw, causing water to stream from burst pipes in the loft, flooding rooms below. The consequences can be very damaging and upsetting, but this can be easily avoided by insulating exposed pipework."

Beat the Chill with the tips below:

  • Fix dripping taps - even a small trickle can lead to a frozen pipe

  • If your home is going to be empty for a long time, you might want to turn off your water supply and drain down the system

  • If you are going away for a short time, it is a good idea to leave the heating on low at home – some systems have a frost setting. If you can, get someone to drop in to check everything is OK.

  • Make sure your boiler has been serviced to ensure it is running effectively

  • Minimise draughts by closing the doors and windows to unheated parts of your property.

  • Insulate your pipes and water tank, especially tanks in the loft

  • Toilet cisterns, water tanks or pipes in exposed places and unheated outbuildings could cause problems. Ensure they are insulated, or better still, drain them during the winter if you don't need them.
