York House School from Croxley Green joined Affinity Water on Friday 22 March to celebrate World Water Day 2019.

Year 1 students from the school travelled to Affinity Water’s award-winning education centre in Bushey Heath to learn all about the importance of fresh water and the theme of this year’s World Water Day of ‘Leaving no one behind.’

The students carried out a range of activities including pond dipping, which explores the lives of different animal and plant species in the water and how they have adapted to their environment.

The fun and interactive water cycle drama session taught students the extraordinary journey of water in the environment and how it gets all the way from source to people’s taps.

As part the World Water Day theme of ‘Leaving no one Behind’, the students learnt about the importance of water for everyone, everywhere; as well as all living things on planet Earth.

Lastly, the students learnt how important it is to look after our water resources; with several students making pledges to change some of their own water related behaviours such as having shorter showers and turning the tap off when they brush their teeth.

One of the students (aged 5) wrote “I promise to save water by re-using it. If I get rain water I can put it on plants.”

Lara Riley, Year 1 Teacher from York House School said: “One of our school aims is ‘leaving people and places better than we found them’, so our visit tied in really nicely to the World Water Day theme of ‘Leaving no one behind.’ The children have had a great day learning about the importance of conserving and recycling water. Role playing the water cycle was a real highlight and helped embed the children’s understanding of where water comes from.”

Hannah Battram, Education Services Manager said: “Helping young people understand why we need to value and protect our water resources, both in the UK and globally, is so important. It was great opportunity to celebrate World Water Day with the students from York House School!
