Watford Grammar School for Boys launches leading STEM Centre

 

 

Affinity Water’s Education Team has worked with over 1,000 students at Watford Grammar School for Boys this week (from 3 July) to help launch its new state-of-the-art STEM Centre with a school-wide water theme.

 

The students took part in a range of interactive activities to help them understand the importance of water as a natural resource as well as discovering the range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects open to them within the water industry.

 

Year 7-9 students have designed, built and tested a variety of different water networks, whereas Year 10 -12 students have been exploring the STEM behind water resource management. Y12 students have also been teaching younger students about water conservation to help develop their leadership skills, and a small working group of student film makers have been putting together videos exploring the future of water.

 

The activities are part of the upcoming launch of Watford Grammar School for Boys’ new STEM Centre. With the support of a £2.65m capital grant from the UK Government, the school is building a new STEM Centre which is due to be completed in September 2017, allowing it to offer unparalleled STEM teaching. With the arrival of this new Centre, the school plans to increase and further develop student inclusivity and engagement in STEM, enhancing cross-curricular links and increasing awareness for future opportunities in the wide range of STEM-related careers.

 

Hannah Battram, Affinity Water Education Services Manager said: “We are really excited to have had the opportunity to work with students at Watford Grammar School for Boys and help them understand the importance of water as well as the link between STEM subjects and real life industry.”

 

Ian Cooksey, Headteacher at Watford Grammar School for Boys commented: “This has been an excellent cross-curricular event with our staff teaching a variety of water-themed lessons to complement the Affinity Water activities. Bringing industry into the school is a fantastic way to engage students with topics linked to the curriculum, as well as showing some of the ways in which subjects learned at school can translate into interesting and successful careers. This has been a fantastic start to us growing further links with industry and working with other local schools following the opening of our STEM Centre in the Autumn.”
